The Senate will vote today on the nomination of the ill-informed, anti–public school activist Betsy DeVos to the post of Secretary of Education. The opposition to DeVos has been fierce, in part because of her dismal performance in her committee hearing, including a gaffe that rallied advocates of kids with special needs to oppose her candidacy. Whether DeVos is confirmed today or not, though, her candidacy has triggered hard discussions about key areas of education policy—in particular “school choice” and the re-segregation of US public schools.
